Il Tajut is a cultural association devoted to the promotion of eno-gastronomic produce from the Friuli Venezia region of northern Italy. The dining room is cosy, intimate and playfully decorated in traditional Venetian murrina glass, with a tiny upstairs gallery overlooking an upright piano on which guests are invited to play if there isn’t already a performer on show. The menu is strictly regional and the owner will not hesitate to offer good counsel on wines, or typical dishes. The latter includes Frico, a heavenly warm cheese and potato tart, platters of regional salamis and smoked hams, and an array of light, fresh fish dishes to be washed down with a cool Tocai. For those still going strong after the vino, I expressed a minor interest in tasting a local digestif with my coffee and was then presented with several bottles of home brew to tipple from, on the house, and somehow didn’t manage to leave until I’d tried them all.
